Where is the most common pool leak?

As a matter of fact, your pool can leak from anywhere water touches it. Pool pumps, filters, heaters, plumbing, plaster, skimmers and more can all be culprits of leaking water.

We've been doing pool leak detections for over 20 years and have come across a number of different situations in which the water was leaking from the pool. 

Usually it is best to start with the easiest and cheapest locations when it comes to looking for leaks. First, look at your pool equipment while it is running. Turn on all of your water features and cleaner and Main pool pumps. Watch for any drips or water spraying. You can also turn the valves different ways to make sure that it's not on any of the features that periodically come on such as waterfalls or Spa Jets.

If nothing is suspect in the stuff above ground, next it is time to move on to the other parts of this swimming pool. Look for any cracks or holes in the pool surface. You can get some Leak Detection dye or just regular food coloring and squirt it very slowly and closely to the suspected leak and see if it gets sucked into the area you suspect. Also look around all of your return jets and the part where the plastic skimmer meets the Gunite on the side of your pool. Look for any holes or cracks in grout or plaster and use the dye if you suspect anything.

If everything looks good from all the previous tests then unfortunately it is time to move on to the plumbing. Most homeowners are not equipped to test the plumbing because it takes some specialized equipment and care to safely test the plumbing. When it comes to noticeable water loss most of the times the water is being lost out of the plumbing. A leak in the plumbing can cause a pool to drop six or more inches in one day.
